Reflections

Experiences

Learning the typographic system has been a challenging and rewarding experience. Exploring the fundamentals of typographic hierarchy, spacing, and alignment gave me a solid foundation to build on. The process of extracting letterforms from images to create a new typeface was especially interesting. It enabled me to recognise the potential in existing designs and transform them into distinct typefaces. Using Illustrator and Fontlab, I was able to create a complete typeface with all uppercase and lowercase characters. Moreover, I learnt that maintaining consistency across characters is very important while creating a typeface. Creating mockups to demonstrate my typeface in real-world scenarios was a significant phase. It helped me visualise how the typeface would appear in different contexts and gave me a tangible way to present my work.

Observations

I observed that typography requires a high level of accuracy. Small adjustments to spacing, weight, and alignment can have a significant impact on a typeface's overall appearance and readability. The interplay between art and technology was evident, as designing a typeface requires both artistic creativity and technical skills. Tools such as Illustrator and Fontlab are essential, but they must be used with a thorough understanding of typographic principles. It is critical to ensure that all characters in a typeface are harmonious, as inconsistent design elements can detract from the overall appearance and feel. Creating mockups emphasised the importance of user experience; demonstrating how a typeface works in various contexts is critical for determining its functionality and appeal.

Findings

One significant finding is that creating a typeface is an iterative process. Initial designs frequently require multiple rounds of refinement to achieve the desired result, with feedback and testing taking critical roles. Both Illustrator and Fontlab provide powerful features for typeface creation, with Illustrator excelling at designing individual characters and Fontlab at compiling and fine-tuning the entire typeface.
